Abstract:

Renewable Energy is the basis for sustainable development, and it is probably the only way ahead for the survival and prosperity of humankind. Even though, renewable energy products are at their critical growth stage of their product life cycle, governments and businesses in the energy industry implement ad hoc strategies without making serious efforts to really understand customer preferences and behavior in the use of energy. This could jeopardize the growth of the industry with negative consequences for all stakeholders involved: governments, businesses, the society as well as the natural environment. In order to avoid this unwanted scenario an approach is proposed for measuring the market potential of renewable energy systems and energy saving products taking into consideration government/industry strategies and the corresponding consumer behavior. The approach is implemented for the case of the Cyprus Renewable Energy market, where a number of parameters on consumer preferences expectations and behavior are identified. The better understanding of the renewable energy market would help businesses to develop more attractive products and governments to provide appropriate incentives for persuading consumers to invest. In this way, renewable energy products will really take off and our world could be saved from a foreseen environmental catastrophe.
