Title: "Assess Agreement Between Two Clinical Methods of Measurement in Continuous Variables"
Abstract: In different areas, namely in Engineering and Health, the process to measure a variable in continuous scales depends on skills, experience, the measurement instrument and the observer's expectation, among others. Although it is possible to reduce the degree of error it is impossible to eliminate it. This way, when we have two alternative measurement methods it is important to evaluate the agreement between them before considering to use both interchangeably or replace the old method by the new one. To do so there are several Statistical methods. All of them have limitations, so no method appears to be foolproof. Thus, to assess the statistical agreement between two alternative clinical measurements methods we applied the well-known limits of agreement to the real data available. Once the empirical distribution of the differences does not verify the assumptions of this parametric approach, a Box Cox transformation and a nonparametric approach were also used. A bootstrap resampling method was applied in order to obtain robust confidence intervals, for the mean and median of differences (which estimate the bias). An information-based measure of disagreement was computed and the 95% confidence interval was also estimated using a bootstrap procedure. The statistical results obtained, with these simple and attractive approaches, seem to point in the direction of using both measurement methods interchangeability. However the final decision will be a clinical, and not a statistical, judgement.
