Title: "Emphasis on Environmental Pollution Caused by Industrials Activity in Oltenia Region, Romania"
Abstract: Environmental pollution is emphasized as the contamination with materials that interact with human health, quality of life or the natural function of living organisms and their environment. Even if sometimes environmental pollution is a result of natural causes, most of pollutants emerge from human activities. The economic activities in the region of SV Oltenia have led, over the years, to continuous pollution of water, air, soil and subsoil. Systematic air quality measurements have shown average annual concentrations, usually at the maximum admissible limit, for ammonia, nitrogen dioxide and dust. Reducing industrial activity has contributed to reducing the amount of noxious emissions released into the environment. A considerable area of land is affected by the existence of mining exploitations, activity that generates sedimentary dust and removes important areas through the tailings deposits. Oil exploration mainly affects the soil. There are areas where the soil is affected by erosion, in depth and on the surface, landslides and shore erosion as well as tailings exploitation. The soil of the region is degraded by its low and very low content of phosphorus and nitrogen, strong and moderate acidity, soil compaction, oil pollution and pesticides, etc. As far as groundwater is concerned, relatively high concentrations of ammonium, nitrates and nitrites persist in some areas of the countryside, negatively affecting the quality of drinking water and contributing to the health of the population in affected areas. One of the major environmental problems faced by the S-V Oltenia region is the waste disposal, which does not adequately address both the rural and the urban environment, can seriously affect the environmental factors and the population's health due to the technologies and installations still obsolete in the industry , in which a great deal of energy and material is consumed. Environmental protection issues are particularly complex and target all sectors of activity: economic, social and political. The main environmental policy objectives in Romania are designed to ensure a clean environment and aim to ensure a healthy life for the population, to lead to the elimination of poverty and environmental degradation, to regenerate the economy on the basis of sustainable development principles and to harmonize national legislation on the protection of the environment with that of the European Union. Over the past decades the European Union implemented a wide range of environmental legislation that has significantly reduced air, water and soil pollution. Legislation on chemicals has been upgraded and the use of many toxic or dangerous substances has been restricted. However, many challenges persist and these must be tackled together in a structured way. The Environment Action Program (EAP) will be guiding the European environment policy until 2020. In order to give a more long-term direction, it sets out a vision beyond what the Union wants to be by 2050.

Title: "Processing of Ceramic, Metal, and Composite Materials Using Field Assisted Sintering Technique (FAST) for Rapid Manufacturing of Advanced Components"
Abstract: Manufacturing of components used in advanced applications and operating under extreme conditions, such as spacecraft parts, cooling systems in high-end computers, hypersonic vehicles and turbine blades, require novel materials and manufacturing techniques. In most cases, new composite materials are required which possess properties tailored for the specific application, and advanced manufacturing techniques are needed which can handle and shape the materials in an efficient manner. In this presentation, we will discuss how new, composite materials are synthesized to make advanced components using the recently emerging electric field-assisted sintering technique (FAST) in order to address the most challenging problems for future applications. Using the results obtained in our unique laboratory facilities, we will illustrate how FAST can be employed to manufacture advanced thermal management components and net-shaped devices used under extreme temperature and pressure environments, and to synthesize new ceramic and composite materials for ultra-high temperature and light-weight applications. Among the examples discussed are, nickel-based superalloy powder for high temperature hybrid turbine disk applications, layered materials with improved mechanical toughness, light-weight alloys for aircraft applications, ultra-high temperature tungsten alloys for space applications, and compositionally-graded copper-diamond composites for advanced thermal management.
